Former Dormaa East MP Paul Apraku Twum Barimah has criticized President John Dramani Mahama for failing to deliver on his promise to end illegal mining, commonly known as galamsey as reported by Ghana Web.
Twum Barimah accused Mahama of misleading Ghanaians with his campaign pledge to eliminate galamsey within 90 days of taking office.
However, months into his administration, the situation has worsened, with illegal miners now operating with armed guards and attacking Forestry Commission officers.
“This is not what Ghanaians were promised. Ghanaians were promised an end to galamsey, but that is not what we are experiencing,” Twum Barimah stated.
He contrasted Mahama’s failure with former President Nana Akufo-Addo’s efforts to curb illegal mining, arguing that the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government took decisive action, even at the cost of losing electoral support in mining communities.
Twum Barimah also called on Mahama and his ministers to apologize to Akufo-Addo for previously accusing him of benefiting from illegal mining.
He claimed that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) had used galamsey as a political tool to tarnish the NPP government, yet failed to address the issue once in power.
According to him, the current administration’s failure to act effectively proves that past accusations against Akufo-Addo were baseless.
He insisted that Mahama and his team must take responsibility and admit to their shortcomings in tackling illegal mining.
