In a recent interview on The KSM Show, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Minority Leader in Parliament and Member of Parliament for Effutu, discussed potential contenders for the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) flagbearer position.
He mentioned that former Vice President and 2024 flagbearer Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia is considering another run. Additionally, Kennedy Agyapong, who previously contested in 2023, is expected to make a comeback. Afenyo-Markin also noted that other possible candidates include Abetifi MP Bryan Acheampong and former Education Minister Dr. Osei Yaw Adutwum. Reflecting on the NPP’s performance in the recent elections, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the party’s disappointing results, with their parliamentary seats reduced to 88 compared to the NDC’s 187. He emphasized the necessity for internal restructuring, rebranding, and revitalizing the party base. As the current Minority Leader, he feels a responsibility to lead these efforts, especially in the absence of a designated party leader or flagbearer.
Afenyo-Markin stated, “As a Minority Leader, you must also lead the rebranding. Now, there is no party leader. We don’t have a flagbearer yet. So now, as a leader in Parliament, de facto, everything is on my shoulders. The party is looking at it, members in Parliament must activate themselves. I also see that I have a responsibility to lead the rebranding of the party.”
These insights shed light on the NPP’s current introspection and the potential figures who may steer its future direction.
