The former Chief Executive Officer of the Microfinance and Small Loans Centre (MASLOC), Sedina Tamakloe Attionu, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison with hard labor after being found guilty of causing financial loss to the state.
Her conviction comes alongside that of the former Chief Operating Officer, Daniel Axim, who received a five-year sentence. These judgments conclude a trial that commenced in 2019.
Both individuals were charged with 78 counts, including theft, conspiracy to steal, and money laundering, as well as breaches of public procurement laws.
These offenses occurred during their tenure at MASLOC from 2013 to 2016, during which they misappropriated substantial funds.
Notable examples include the unaccounted GH₵500,000 withdrawn from Obaatampa Savings and Loans and GH₵1.7 million earmarked for a sensitization project, much of which was embezzled.
Funds meant for fire victims in Kantamanso, totaling GH₵1.4 million, were also significantly misused.
The court case highlighted further irregularities, such as overpayments for the bulk purchase of vehicles and Samsung phones for MASLOC, with costs exceeding market rates.
Despite seeking medical leave abroad during the trial, Sedina Tamakloe Attionu absconded and was tried in absentia.
This judgment reinforces the imperative of accountability in public service and serves as a stern warning against financial misconduct.
The conviction and sentencing signify Ghana’s resolute stance against corruption and its effort to preserve public resources.
By holding public officials accountable, this case sets a precedent for zero tolerance towards the misuse of state funds. It sends a message to officials entrusted with public resources to act with integrity and responsibility.
