Former Deputy Attorney General Reveals Why Prosecution Delayed

Years after the assassination of investigative journalist Ahmed Suale, the search for justice remains incomplete. Alfred Tuah Yeboah, former Deputy Attorney General, has shed light on the reasons the case did not progress during his tenure.

In a Channel One TV interview, Tuah Yeboah explained that although police investigations were thorough, the evidence collected was not strong enough to proceed with a prosecution. He shared that the case had been reviewed by the Attorney General’s office, but there wasn’t sufficient evidence to move forward at the time.

“The police submitted their findings, but after reviewing them, we concluded that there wasn’t enough evidence to charge anyone. We advised them to continue gathering more evidence,” Tuah Yeboah said.

His comments have sparked renewed debates about the difficulties in solving high-profile crimes in Ghana, particularly those involving journalists and human rights defenders. Many have criticized the delay in bringing justice for Ahmed Suale, who was killed in 2019 after his investigative work exposed corruption.

Recently, there has been a glimmer of hope, as a suspect, Daniel Owusu Koranteng, has been brought before the court and remanded into custody. While Tuah Yeboah acknowledged this step forward, he expressed caution about the case’s strength.

“It’s encouraging to see that someone has been brought before the court, but we still need to ask if there’s enough solid evidence to move forward with the case,” he noted.

The case continues to be a point of concern for many Ghanaians, who are calling for greater transparency and efficiency in the justice system, especially in cases involving press freedom and attacks on journalists. As the investigation continues, all eyes remain on the Attorney General’s office and the Ghana Police Service to ensure that justice is fully served for Ahmed Suale.
