Afenyo-Markin, Leader of the New Patriotic Party Caucus and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has played a key role in a major parliamentary dispute in Ghana.
Chief Justice Gertrude Araba Esaaba Sackey Torkornoo recently criticised delays in court proceedings regarding the declaration of four parliamentary seats as vacant—a decision initiated by Afenyo-Markin.
She reprimanded Thaddeus Sory, the lawyer representing Speaker Alban Bagbin, for failing to submit crucial documents within the court-imposed deadline, as reported by Adom TV.
During the hearing, the Chief Justice expressed frustration over the situation, stating, “We’re living in a country where Parliament isn’t sitting,” and stressed the need for urgent action on the matter.
She questioned Sory about the delayed submissions and emphasised that the case had significant national implications.
Previously, the Supreme Court had dismissed an application from Speaker Bagbin, who sought to overturn the ruling declaring the four seats vacant. His legal team argued that the court lacked jurisdiction in the matter.
