Police officers jubilate over Dampare’s dismissal

Some police officers have been celebrating the appointment of Christian Tetteh Yohuno as the new Inspector General of Police (IGP), expressing excitement over the leadership change.

IGP Yohuno was sworn into office by President John Dramani Mahama on Friday, March 14, at the Jubilee House, replacing Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.

During his visit to the Police Headquarters after his swearing-in, officers were seen jubilating, hailing his leadership, and welcoming him with enthusiasm.

The excitement among personnel reflects optimism about his leadership and the future of the Ghana Police Service under his tenure.

In a dramatic display of joy, some officers openly sprayed money on the newly appointed IGP, a gesture symbolizing their excitement and approval of his appointment.

Amid the celebrations, some police personnel openly criticized former IGP Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, describing him as a “tyrant” and a “dictator.” According to them, his removal has “freed” the police service from his grip.

Their reaction signals a shift in expectations under the new leadership, as officers anticipate a different approach to policing and administration under IGP Yohuno.

The appointment of IGP Yohuno follows a restructuring effort aimed at strengthening law enforcement and ensuring public safety across the country. The new IGP replaces Dr. George Akuffo Dampare.
