According to a report by Ghpage, police in Ghana have arrested two suspected terrorists traveling on an Accra-bound bus with a stash of weapons and ammunition hidden in their luggage. The suspects, 35-year-old Ibrahim Musa and 29-year-old Sani Abubakar, were detained at a routine checkpoint in Kintampo, Bono East Region.
The bus, traveling from Tamale to Accra, was stopped for inspection, during which officers discovered several AK-47 rifles, rounds of ammunition, and explosive materials hidden in the suspects’ bags.
“We noticed the suspects acting suspiciously during the search, and upon further inspection, we found the weapons,” said ASP Philip Antwi, who led the operation. “The suspects were unable to explain why they had the firearms.”
Passengers were shocked as police handcuffed the suspects and removed the weapons. “I was sitting behind them and saw them whispering during the search,” said passenger Akua Mensah. “When the police found the guns, everyone was screaming. We’re grateful the police acted quickly.”
The weapons recovered included four AK-47 rifles, two pistols, and over 500 rounds of ammunition. Preliminary investigations suggest the suspects may be connected to extremist groups in West Africa.
“We are collaborating with national security agencies to determine their links and motives,” ASP Antwi added, urging the public to stay vigilant and report suspicious activities.
The suspects were taken to the regional police command in Sunyani for further interrogation. Locals in Kintampo expressed concern over the rising insecurity in the area, with resident Yaw Asamoah calling for increased police patrols.
Authorities assured the public that security measures along major highways would be strengthened, and the suspects are expected in court next week on charges of illegal possession of firearms, ammunition, and possible involvement in terrorism. Travelers have been urged to stay alert and cooperate with security at checkpoints.
