Old Photo Of Napo’s Father Causes a Stir on Social Media

One of Ghana’s leading media outlets, Metro TV, recently shared a historic post on social media featuring the biological father of Honourable Matthew Opoku Prempeh, a prominent figure in Ghanaian politics. The post highlighted a significant moment in history when Opoku Prempeh’s father, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, took an oath of allegiance as a teenager upon being enstooled as the Apagyahene. Metro TV’s caption read, “NAPO’s father, Oheneba Kwame Kyeretwie, swore an oath of allegiance to Asantehene Osei Agyemang Prempeh II, becoming Apagyahene at just 17 years old.”

The Apagyahene title holds great significance in the Asante traditional system, symbolizing leadership and service to the community. This historic event underscores the deep-rooted traditions and heritage of the Asante people.

Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, popularly known as NAPO, is a prominent member of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) and has held several influential positions in Ghana’s political landscape. He served as Ghana’s Minister for Education from 2017 to 2021 under the administration of His Excellency Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo and Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia. During his tenure, NAPO played a pivotal role in implementing the Free Senior High School (SHS) policy, a landmark initiative aimed at providing free secondary education to all Ghanaian students. He also spearheaded significant education reforms, including the introduction of a new curriculum and the expansion of technical and vocational education. Under his leadership, numerous infrastructure projects were initiated, such as the construction of new schools, dormitories, and other educational facilities to improve access to quality education.

Before his appointment as Education Minister, NAPO served as the Member of Parliament for the Manhyia South constituency in Kumasi. Most recently, he was selected as the presidential running mate to His Excellency Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia on the NPP ticket, further solidifying his role as a key figure in Ghana’s political arena.
