The Ghana Police Service has arrested Daniel Tuffour in connection with the death of Joana Yabani Deladem Aku, a 21-year-old final-year student at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi. Tuffour, a hostel mate of Joana, was apprehended after CCTV footage linked him to the incident.

Joana, a Biological Science student, was found unresponsive near the Central Laboratory on the morning of February 27, 2025. Medical personnel from the university’s hospital confirmed her death at the scene, and her body was transferred to the morgue for further investigation.

An initial examination of Joana’s body revealed signs of violence, leading investigators to suspect foul play. Authorities reviewed evidence from the crime scene, which pointed to Tuffour as the primary suspect. Additionally, the police discovered key items, including the clothes Tuffour wore on the night of the incident, strengthening their case.

The arrest has left the KNUST community in shock, with students and faculty expressing their grief over the loss of the young woman. The Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, met with Joana’s family to offer his condolences and assured them that justice would be pursued. He also visited the university to discuss improving security on campus to better protect students.

Joana’s death has sparked widespread sadness, particularly among her friends, classmates, and alumni. Many have taken to social media to mourn her passing and call for enhanced safety measures at KNUST.
