The Western Regional Police Command on Saturday, 22nd February, apprehended key figures involved in illegal mining, including seven Chinese nationals and eight Ghanaians.
The arrests took place in Ablebo and parts of Akango, near the River Ankobra in the Nzema East Municipality, as part of ongoing efforts to clamp down on illegal small-scale mining, commonly referred to as galamsey.
This latest operation forms part of the government’s renewed crackdown on illegal mining following the appointment of Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah as Minister for Lands and Natural Resources.
A senior police official reaffirmed the government’s commitment to tackling the menace, stating, “This is a clear message that illegal mining activities will no longer be tolerated, and those involved will be held accountable.”
During the operation, authorities seized 10 excavators, which were allegedly being used for illegal mining activities.
The police confirmed that the suspects are currently being processed for prosecution. “These arrests are just the beginning. We are determined to root out illegal miners and protect our water bodies from further destruction,” the police official added.
The latest crackdown comes less than a week after National Security operatives arrested three Chinese nationals and their Ghanaian accomplice for suspected illegal mining activities along the Pra River near Supom-Dunkwa in the Shama District.
The suspects were accused of contributing to the pollution of the river, which has raised concerns among local communities and environmental activists.
Authorities have reiterated their commitment to intensifying enforcement efforts and bringing perpetrators to justice.
“We will not relent in our fight against illegal mining. Every individual engaged in these unlawful activities should be prepared to face the full force of the law,” the police assured.
The government continues to urge communities to cooperate with law enforcement in reporting illegal mining operations to safeguard the nation’s natural resources.
