In a surprise move, President John Dramani Mahama has effectively scrapped the Electronic Transfer Levy (E-Levy), Betting Tax, and COVID-19 Levy.
According to sources close to the presidency, the decision to repeal these taxes is aimed at alleviating the financial burden on Ghanaians and boosting economic growth.
The official confirmation of the tax repeal is expected to be announced by the Finance Minister on March 11th during the Budget reading.
The E-Levy, which was introduced in 2022, had been widely criticized for its impact on the cost of living and the digital economy. The Betting Tax and COVID-19 Levy had also faced opposition from various stakeholders.
The repeal of these taxes is seen as a major victory for advocates of tax reform and is expected to provide relief to individuals and businesses across the country.
Ghanaians have taken to social media to express their excitement and gratitude, with many hailing the decision as a welcome relief and a step in the right direction.
The opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has however questioned the timing of the announcement, suggesting that it may be a political gimmick ahead of the general elections.
As the country awaits the official confirmation of the tax repeal, many are eagerly anticipating the potential impact on the economy and their personal finances.
