Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State for Government Communications, recently addressed growing concerns regarding the potential removal of the Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson, Jean Mensa. In his statement, Kwakye Ofosu emphasized that President John Dramani Mahama has no intention of dismissing Jean Mensa or any other official just because they were appointed by a previous administration. He made it clear that there had been no petitions or allegations of misconduct against the EC Chairperson that would warrant such an action.
This comes amid ongoing debates surrounding the performance and impartiality of the Electoral Commission, which Jean Mensa has led since her appointment. Critics have often accused the EC of being biased and compromising its independence, particularly when it comes to its ties with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP). In October 2021, Felix Kwakye Ofosu himself had criticized Jean Mensa and her deputy, Dr. Bossman Asare, claiming they had compromised the integrity of the Commission by aligning too closely with the NPP. He even described them as a “tag team” that had reduced the EC to an extension of the NPP headquarters.Despite the criticisms, the government has emphasized its commitment to preserving the independence of constitutional bodies like the EC. Kwakye Ofosu’s recent comments make it clear that any decisions regarding the tenure of the EC Chairperson will only be made if there is substantial evidence of wrongdoing, not based on political motivations.
There have been calls for the removal of Jean Mensa and her deputies, with a petition submitted to President Mahama in January 2025. The petition claimed that they had violated the constitution and displayed incompetence and bias. However, the President has yet to take action, signaling that the government will only act based on solid evidence, preserving the integrity of state institutions.
While some have called for the dismissal of the EC officials, the government insists that there will be no arbitrary removals without clear evidence of misconduct. This reflects the administration’s commitment to upholding democratic principles and maintaining the EC’s independence.
