The elections for the Ashanti Regional Council of State have descended into chaos.
According to reports, strongly built males disrupted the voting process by trashing Electoral Commission (EC) equipment and physically assaulted several journalists.
Some guys were seen forcing their way through a police roadblock at the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council grounds in a video that has gone viral on social media.
It has also been claimed that an incident happened during the Greater Accra region’s voting, however the Ghana Police Service responded quickly to restore order.
The election has since been halted in the Ashanti Region, and security forces have failed to restore order.
The pandemonium is said to have begun with the unexpected defeat of National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate Yaw Owusu Obimpeh, who was widely seen as a prime candidate.
Meanwhile, the Electoral Commission (EC) reports that 155 candidates from Ghana’s 16 regions have filed candidacy papers, comprising 145 males and 10 females.
Regional delegates to the Council of State will be elected in each region’s capital city.
The Council of State elections will choose regional representatives to advise President John Dramani Mahama on crucial state matters.
The applicants successfully completed the nomination process, which required them to meet particular qualifying criteria stipulated by the EC.
The Council of State election, unlike the parliamentary and presidential elections, is not available to the general public. Instead, Ghana’s 261 District Assemblies will designate two members to vote.
The Council, established under Article 89 of the 1992 Constitution, is a crucial consultative organization that provides professional opinion on governance, national security, economic development, and other essential state affairs.
They serve as an advisory body to the President on policy formulation and national governance, as required by the Constitution.
