President Mahama’s Bold Move Shakes Up Electoral Commission Leadership

Former President John Mahama is facing criticism from members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) and civil society groups for his recent petition to have Electoral Commission (EC) Chairperson Jean Mensa and three other commissioners removed from their positions. The petition, filed on behalf of the NDC, calls for the removal of Dr. Eric Bossman Asare, Samuel Tettey, and Dr. Peter Appiahene in addition to Jean Mensa.
The petition alleges that the commissioners have failed to discharge their duties effectively and impartially, citing concerns over the handling of the 2020 general elections and the recent voter registration exercise. President Mahama and the NDC have accused the EC of bias and incompetence, claiming that the commission played a role in manipulating the election results in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
Supporters of President Mahama have praised his efforts to hold the EC accountable, arguing that the commission’s actions have undermined the integrity of Ghana’s democratic process. However, critics have condemned the petition as a politically motivated move to undermine the independence of the EC and discredit the results of the 2020 elections.
The Office of the President has yet to respond to the petition, but the EC has dismissed the allegations as baseless and unfounded. In a statement released to the press, the commission defended its handling of the elections and voter registration, stating that it had followed legal procedures and international best practices throughout the process.
The heated debate over President Mahama’s petition highlights the ongoing tensions between the opposition and the government, as well as concerns over the integrity of Ghana’s electoral system. As the country prepares for the upcoming 2024 elections, the role of the EC and its commissioners will continue to be a topic of intense scrutiny and debate.
