A determined Ghanaian cyclist, James Kumbeni, is set to embark on an ambitious journey from Ghana to Morocco by bicycle in support of the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
This extraordinary adventure is not only a testament to James’ endurance but also part of his campaign to raise awareness about climate change and promote sustainable transportation.
As cyclist, James plans to begin his journey two months before the tournament, allowing sufficient time to navigate the challenging terrain across multiple countries.
His mission is twofold: to highlight the urgent need for climate action and to raise funds to provide bicycles to underprivileged students in Ghana, enabling them to commute to school more easily and sustainably.
Having already demonstrated his cycling prowess by completing the longest recorded cycling journey in Ghana—from Bolgatanga in the Upper East Region to Accra.
James is no stranger to long-distance challenges. Currently, he is on a nationwide tour, visiting all 260 districts to advocate for climate change mitigation and encourage the youth to adopt eco-friendly transportation options.
In an interview with Asaase News in the North East Region, James expressed his motivation for the journey, saying: “I will be cycling all the way from Ghana to Morocco this year towards the AFCON.
“The reason is very simple, I am someone who cares about the environment, yes, climate change is something that is catching up with us and we should take climate action to avert this particular time bomb that we are sitting. So with this my cycling from Ghana to Morocco, I hope to use this opportunity to reach out to people, to let people know that yes, climate change is here with us and we must all take the necessary measures to avert it.”
James also aims to use the trip as an opportunity to gather financial support and donations of bicycles, which he plans to distribute to students in rural communities across Ghana.
He emphasised the importance of cycling as a sustainable and affordable means of transportation that can contribute to reducing carbon emissions.
“In this trip, I will also look forward to raising funds, raising bicycles to come back to Ghana and give it to people who are in the rural villages, the rural communities so that they could cycle all the way from home to school,” he added.
He is urging young Ghanaians to embrace cycling as a habit and contribute to the fight against climate change in Africa.
With his unwavering dedication to environmental sustainability and youth empowerment, James Kumbeni’s journey is set to inspire many across the continent.
