In a move to bolster Ghana’s maritime capabilities, the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority (GPHA) has launched a Multi-Purpose Vessel at the Port of Tema. This vessel, designed to handle a wide array of crucial operations, is expected to play a pivotal role in enhancing the safety and sustainability of the country’s maritime activities.
Named after Mr. Gordon Anim, a respected figure in Ghana’s maritime industry who dedicated 35 years to the Port Authority, the MPV Gordon Anim marks a significant step towards ensuring Ghana’s continued leadership in regional maritime operations.
During the commissioning ceremony, GPHA’s Director-General, Michael Achagwe Luguje, read a speech on his behalf by the Director of the Port of Tema, Mrs. Sandra Opoku, emphasizing the vessel’s importance for the country’s maritime growth. According to the Director-General, Mr. Anim’s legacy, which includes his tenure as Director of both the Tema and Takoradi Ports, underscores the significance of this new vessel.
He highlighted the vessel’s innovative design, which includes capabilities for oil spill response, hazardous material containment, and waste collection—features critical to promoting environmental protection and operational efficiency.
Mrs. Opoku further noted that the MPV Gordon Anim is designed to handle a variety of maritime operations, including oil spill response, hazardous material containment, and waste collection at sea. She added that the vessel’s advanced technology and versatile capabilities align with GPHA’s goals of embracing innovation and sustainability in maritime trade.
The Director of the Port of Takoradi, Peter Amo-Bediako, extended his best wishes for the vessel and expressed his hope that it would significantly enhance GPHA’s success.
On his part, Mr. Anim expressed profound gratitude to the board, management, and staff of GPHA for the honor bestowed upon him. He stated that the recognition would further motivate him to continue contributing to the development of the maritime sector.
This Multi-Purpose Vessel will help address both environmental and operational challenges while improving safety, efficiency, and sustainability across the Ports of Tema and Takoradi.
