President John Mahama Joins African Leaders in Nairobi to Discuss AU Reforms

According to a report from GhanaWeb, President John Dramani Mahama will participate in a significant meeting in Nairobi, Kenya, alongside various African leaders to discuss the institutional reforms needed within the African Union (AU).

This initiative aims to enhance the AU’s capabilities in areas such as funding its peace operations and providing support to member states.

Since his appointment as the African Union Champion for Institutional Reforms, President William Ruto has been a strong advocate for improving the AU’s efficiency and strategic focus.

The upcoming high-level meeting will allow for a thorough examination of the AU’s current status and facilitate discussions on future directions.

A comprehensive report on these reforms is set to be presented during the 38th Ordinary General Assembly session of the AU, which will take place from February 15 to 16, 2025, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia.

President Mahama’s participation is considered crucial, especially following his recent political resurgence, which was highlighted by the presence of over 20 heads of state and representatives at his swearing-in ceremony three weeks ago.

Many leaders are looking to leverage Mahama’s extensive experience, particularly his tenure as Chair of ECOWAS, to advance the AU’s reform agenda.

Moreover, the president plans to engage in bilateral discussions with other African leaders, aligning with his broader strategy to rejuvenate Ghana’s position on the continent.
