Spokesperson for President John Dramani Mahama, Ofosu Kwakye, has reflected on the decisive mandate given to Mahama and the weight of responsibility it carries.

His statements came amidst a heated public debate over the president’s decision to ‘dismiss’ Naa Momo Lartey after she arrived late to the swearing-in ceremony for newly approved ministers.

“Ghanaians have significant expectations of the government led by John Dramani Mahama, following their decisive mandate for him to lead the nation,” Kwakye noted in a discussion on TV3, setting the stage for a broader defence of the president’s actions

He explained that the criticism of Lartey’s dismissal overlooks the complicated circumstances surrounding the incident.

While some netizens argue that the president acted harshly, others believe his decision was necessary to uphold discipline and accountability.

But, according to Kwakye, Mahama’s schedule was particularly demanding during this period.

In addition to local responsibilities, Kwakye said he was preparing for critical engagements in Angola, Tanzania, and Kenya.

Despite his packed agenda, he said the president prioritised swearing in the ministers as a single group, an effort aimed at efficiency.

This decision required his team to work closely with Parliament to expedite the vetting process, but not all ministers received approval on time.

He further disclosed that Naa Momo Lartey, however, delayed due to a pressing family emergency.

He added that she informed the presidency of her circumstances but was encouraged to attend if possible.

Her late arrival, unfortunately, clashed with Mahama’s meticulously planned schedule, culminating in her ‘no-show.’
