Sit Down, Relax – Kwame Obeng Hits Back at Hecklers During First Parliamentary Speech

According to reports from GhanaWeb, outspoken Independent MP for Gomoa Central, Kwame Asare Obeng, commonly known as A Plus, commanded attention during his inaugural speech in Parliament since taking office on January 7, 2025.

When called upon by the Second Deputy Speaker, Andrews Asiamah Amoako, to contribute to a discussion on a report regarding ministerial nominees, A Plus made it clear that he had been instructed by the Majority Chief Whip to address a specific appointment.

Unfortunately, the report concerning that appointment was unavailable at the time.

This led to some interruptions from his fellow MPs, but A Plus responded assertively.

He stated that he had received conflicting information and sought clarification on the matter.

The Second Deputy Speaker attempted to summarize A Plus’s point, confirming that the report he was to comment on was not ready.

A Plus affirmed this, which resulted in further heckling from his colleagues.

Undeterred, A Plus addressed the disruptions directly, urging his peers to calm down and emphasizing that he was following the directives provided by the Chief Whip.

“Relax, relax, you are not… Mr. Speaker, I am dealing with my whip, and she gave me information, and that is what I am working on. Sit down, relax, relax, relax,” he stated.

After this exchange, the Second Deputy Speaker moved on to another MP for their input.

A Plus secured his position in the December 7, 2024, parliamentary elections by obtaining 14,277 votes out of a total of 36,026 valid ballots cast, defeating the incumbent NPP candidate, Naana Eyiah Quansah, who received 11,637 votes.
