‘Co-opt critical minds for vetting’ – Prof Kanton to appointments committee

Prof Roger Kanton, a former Research Scientist at the Savannah Agricultural Research Institute (SARI) of the Council for Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) has called on the Appointments Committee to include experts in their vetting process.

Prof Kanton emphasised the need for critical minds to thoroughly evaluate candidates, especially in specialised fields like agriculture.

He told Bernard Avle on the Citi Breakfast Show on Citi FM on Tuesday, January 21, that “I would have liked to suggest that they need to co-opt very critical minds like some of us to just have joined to ask one or two questions.

“You see Parliament as I have seen they do not have the expertise to really bring out the meat and the flesh from some of the candidates when it comes to critical brain scientific areas like agriculture.

Prof Kanton further expressed his concerns about the current vetting process, highlighting the lack of rigorous questioning.

“I was wondering which of them there is a seasoned agriculturist to be able to pierce through. They were just asking friendly questions. For example, the NDC MPs all said praises, congratulations, ‘I know you can do it.’ ‘How can he do it?’ How can he do it?

“We are Ghanaians we need to know. You go and sit there and say he can do it. I don’t think they really perused critically,” he remarked.
