The Krontihene of Akyem Asuom, Nana Boadi Amponim Obodade III, recently revealed how his efforts to combat illegal mining, also known as galamsey, in his community landed him in court as per reports from Ghana Web on Saturday, January 18, 2025.
In an interview with GH One TV on January 17, 2025, the traditional leader shared the challenges he faced in his fight against the widespread issue of illegal mining.
Determined to make a difference, Obodade III took it upon himself to work with local Asafo groups to ensure miners carried out necessary reclamation of lands.
He also submitted petitions to various government agencies in the Eastern Region, including the Assistant to the Regional Commander and the Minerals Commission inspectorate, but received no substantial response.
Despite these setbacks, the Krontihene pressed on, reaching out to the Ghana Armed Forces for support. “I petitioned the operations unit and even went as far as the Southern Command of the Ghana Armed Forces, where some soldiers volunteered to come and help us,” he explained.
Obodade III, a vocal critic of the previous administration, disclosed that the military had arrested foreign nationals, including Chinese citizens, involved in illegal mining activities.
However, he claimed that these individuals were later released, and he, along with the soldiers, was unexpectedly accused of being involved in criminal activity.
He believes powerful figures in the government interfered with the case, saying, “It was obvious that instructions had come from above never to let any of those people venture into stopping galamsey…”
The case remains pending in court in Koforidua, as the Krontihene continues to fight for justice in the face of adversity.
