Four were taken to hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">It has been\u00a0the deadliest year on record\u00a0for Channel crossings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;It never stops,&#8221; the mayor of Sangatte Guy Allemand told AFP. &#8220;It&#8217;s crossing after crossing, without any let-up.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said seven people had needed intensive care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The French coastguard said a search was ongoing at sea for any other survivors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Home Office confirmed there had been an incident in French waters<strong>,\u00a0<\/strong>with French authorities leading the response and investigation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Pierre-Henri Dumont, MP for the Pas-de-Calais region, told the BBC: &#8220;Any attempt to cross the Channel in this way is very, very dangerous &#8211; but at this time of year, it is even more deadly.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He said rescue teams can respond quickly, but current temperatures mean &#8220;spending even a few minutes in the water&#8221; can be fatal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The incident follows four days in which 1,485 people made the journey, meaning it has been the busiest Christmas period since records began in 2018.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More than 36,000 people have crossed the Channel\u00a0in small boats so far this year, surpassing the 2023 total of 29,437, government figures suggest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The International Organization for Migration (IOM), a UN agency which tracks the number of people who die crossing the Channel, says 77 people\u00a0have died attempting to make the journey this year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Home Office has said it will &#8220;stop at nothing&#8221; to dismantle people smuggling operations, with Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer making &#8220;smashing the gangs&#8221; who facilitate the crossings one of his top priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A number of other boats were reported to have departed from the coast on Sunday, the French coastguard said in its statement.<\/p>\n\n                <p><strong>DISCLAIMER: <\/strong>The Views, Comments, Opinions, Contributions and Statements made by Readers and Contributors on this platform do not necessarily represent the views or policy of Multimedia Group Limited.<\/p>      \n               \n <!-- Post Tags -->\n                \n\n                        \n\n    \n                                 \n                                             \n                    <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Three people have died attempting to cross the English Channel in a small boat on Sunday morning, the French coastguard says.
