Clara Kowlaga Beeri Kasser-Tee, the Chairperson of the Constitutional Review Committee, has criticized the Electoral Commission (EC) for its inconsistent actions, which she argues have fueled public dissatisfaction.<\/p>\n
Speaking on the issue, Kasser-Tee expressed concern about the lack of clarity and consistency in the EC\u2019s handling of the election process.<\/p>\n
\u201cIf you say this is the only circumstance under which we do re-collation, but in another instance, you act differently and fail to demonstrate the distinction, you create room for people to be dissatisfied,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
Kasser-Tee emphasized the importance of following clear and consistent procedures to maintain public trust in the electoral system.<\/p>\n
\u201cFor me, it\u2019s the procedure that is important. When there is clarity and consistency in the process, disputes often don\u2019t even arise,\u201d she added in an interview on Joy News.<\/p>\n
She also questioned why the EC did not oppose the allegations in court. \u201cI was curious why the EC didn\u2019t oppose these allegations in court. If you are amenable to doing what you are supposed to do, why not demonstrate it?\u201d she said, suggesting that the Commission\u2019s failure to act in line with established procedures raised doubts about its transparency.<\/p>\n
The law expert further pointed out that citizens should not have to resort to expensive litigation to compel the EC to do its job.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople shouldn\u2019t need to go through the expense of litigation to get the EC to act,\u201d she remarked.<\/p>\n
According to Kasser-Tee, the EC must clearly demonstrate that its actions are based on the law and fairness. \u201cThe EC must demonstrate clearly that its actions are grounded in law and fairness. Anything less invites unnecessary dissatisfaction,\u201d she concluded.<\/p>\n
Her comments come after the Supreme Court quashed results in the re-collation of votes in Tema Central, Ablekuma North, Techiman South, and Okaikwei Central in the 2024 parliamentary elections.<\/p>\n
The apex court added that the order does not affect Ahafo Ano North and Nsawam Adoagyiri results.<\/p>\n
