Director Chris Columbus claims he quit working on \u201cNational Lampoon\u2019s Christmas Vacation\u201d after he met with the film\u2019s leading actor, Chevy Chase.<\/p>\n

In a new interview with Vanity Fair, the filmmaker, 66, recalled two \u201cbizarre\u201d meetings he allegedly had with Chase, 81, that made him realize he \u201ccouldn\u2019t work\u201d with him.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was signed on\u2026and\u00a0then<\/em>\u00a0I met Chevy Chase,\u201d Columbus recalled, while discussing the the hit 1989 holiday movie. \u201cEven given my situation at the time, where I desperately needed to make a film, I realized I couldn\u2019t work with the guy.\u201d<\/p>\n

Columbus then allegedly called John Hughes \u2014 who wrote \u201cChristmas Vacation\u201d \u2014 and broke the news to him that he and Chase weren\u2019t compatible.<\/p>\n

\u201cI was one of the many who couldn\u2019t work with him. And I called John and I said, \u2018This is really hard for me, but I can\u2019t do this movie with Chevy Chase,’\u201d he continued.<\/p>\n

When Chase and the \u201cGremlins\u201d writer first met, the \u201cCaddyshack\u201d star couldn\u2019t seem to remember that Columbus was the one directing the film.<\/p>\n

\n When Columbus initially met Chase to discuss the movie, the actor allegedly didn\u2019t \u201csay a word\u201d to him.

\u201cMy first meeting with him, I sat down with him. It was just the two of us. He\u00a0had<\/em>\u00a0to know I was directing the movie,\u201d Columbus alleged. \u201cI talked about how I saw the movie, how I wanted to make the movie. He didn\u2019t say anything,\u201d <\/p>\n

The filmmaker further claimed that he spoke to Chase about the movie for a \u201chalf hour\u201d and that he didn\u2019t \u201csay a word\u201d to him.<\/p>\n

\u201cForty minutes into the meeting, he says, \u2018Wait a second. You\u2019re the director?\u2019 And I said, \u2018Yeah\u2026I\u2019m directing the film.\u2019 And he said to me the most surreal, bizarre thing,\u201d he went on.<\/p>\n

\u201cI still haven\u2019t been able to make any sense out of it. He said, \u2018Oh, I thought you were a drummer.\u2019 I said, \u2018Uhh, OK. Let\u2019s start talking about the film again.\u2019 After about 30 seconds, he said, \u2018I got to go.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n

\n Later, Columbus had dinner with the film\u2019s writer, John Hughes, and Chase, during which he felt \u201cbasically nonexistent.\u201d

During their second meeting, when Hughes was also allegedly present, Columbus said he was \u201cbasically nonexistent\u201d to Chase.<\/p>\n

He claimed that Chase and the late film producer \u201ctalked about everything except\u201d\u00a0for \u201cChristmas Vacation.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cWe spent two hours together, and I left the dinner and I thought, \u2018There\u2019s no way I can make a movie with this guy,\u2019\u201d Columbus recalled to Vanity Fair.<\/p>\n

\u201cFirst of all, he\u2019s not engaged [in the conversation]. He\u2019s treating me like s\u2014t. I don\u2019t need this. I\u2019d rather not work again. I\u2019d rather write.\u201d<\/p>\n

Per the outlet, Hughes told Columbus that he \u201ccompletely\u201d understood why he needed to step away from the project and sent him the script for \u201cHome Alone\u201d instead.<\/p>\n

The 1990 Christmas film \u2014 which stars Macaulay and Kieran Culkin \u2014 was \u201ceven more personal\u201d to Columbus, who thought it was a \u201cbetter script\u201d with the added bonus of not having to work with Chase. The movie went on to become one of the most successful holiday classics of all time.<\/p>\n
