Accra, Dec 24, GNA \u2013 President-elect John Dramani Mahama spent the last weekend using a combine harvester to harvest crops on his private farm in the Savannah Region.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The crops include yellow maize for the poultry industry and soya beans.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

A video clip showing the President-elect busy operating the combine harvester on his farm was made available to the Ghana News Agency by his Office.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt has been a busy weekend for me all over the savannah area. Farmers are busy because the fires have started\u202fand if you don\u2019t get your crops in quickly the bushfires will burn them. So, we\u2019re harvesting\u202fsoya bean and maize on this farm,\u201d he stated\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said they supplied their maize and soya beans directly to Asutuare Farms in the Eastern Region for poultry.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He noted that he was also into livestock farming; saying \u201cwe started with the goats and the small ruminants,\u202fand we started with 300 of them. Right now, they\u2019ve increased to almost 500. We have another 200\u202fanimals, and we started just a few months ago and so it\u2019s looking positive\u201d.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The incoming President said they were going to add\u202fsheep and then also eventually cattle.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He reiterated that he was into both livestock and crops production\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said one of the major problems they had as farmers this year, especially with the crops was the droughts\u202fthat occurred, stating that \u201cafter we planted the rain came to a stop\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said it stopped raining and so\u202fafter germination of the crops they had a problem with the maize and the soya beans being able to take root.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cLuckily we have some irrigation equipment here on the farm. We have three sets of irrigation\u202fequipment, so we rolled them out and that is what has saved part of the crop, but we lost\u202fabout 40 per cent of the crop,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe were able to save only about 60 per cent. We would have\u202fhad more this year but unfortunately the droughts happened so what we\u2019re looking to do is to go\u202ftotally under irrigation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have a small river over there and we\u2019ve drilled five boreholes which\u202fare very productive and so next year we\u2019re going to use a pivot system so that we can have enough\u202fwater for irrigation, and it will allow us to do two crops instead of one crop a year.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

The President-elect said they had different kinds of equipment on the farm and that they were working well but after sales service\u202fwas a problem.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cA lot of the dealers sell you the equipment but once you buy the equipment sometimes\u202fyou can\u2019t get the parts, spare parts and so what we need to do is to standardize the equipment\u202fand make sure that anybody who\u2019s selling agricultural machinery in Ghana is able to\u202foffer the farmers after sales service because right now it\u2019s the harvest time,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

He said one of their\u202fcombined harvesters was down and they don\u2019t have the spare parts in the country, hence they had to order them from outside.\u202f\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIf we say we\u2019re waiting for them to bring the parts from my side by the time the parts come,\u202fbushfire would have finished this crop,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cHappily, one of our neighbours has a good combined harvester\u202fand that is what you saw me riding. We have hired it, from him to come and help us\u202fyou know to be able to harvest all the crops before the fires come in.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Mr Mahama said that was why he believed\u202fthat the nation must have farmer service centers, where they have specialized agencies repairing and operating\u202fthe machinery.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

This, he said, would then let the farmer focus on his farming while someone else provided him the service of the machines\u202fso that it doesn\u2019t have to be his headache.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cToday my headache is about this combined harvester how\u202fto get a part it should have been somebody\u2019s headache and mine should just be to procure my\u202fseeds get my fertilizers and be able to grow my crops and so it\u2019s a good experience but farming\u202fis my life, I love it and I\u2019m sure if I didn\u2019t go into politics I\u2019ll be a full-time farmer,\u201d he said.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIn any case when I retire you know after this stint of course, I\u2019m going to go into full-time\u202ffarming. If you want to see me, you\u2019ll have to come here onto the farm.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n
