The Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana, Dr. Abraham Nana Opare Kwakye, has called on President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo to assent to the anti-gay bill before the end of his administration.<\/p>\n
Speaking at the launch of the Presbyterian Church of Ghana\u2019s (PCG) Bicentennial Anniversary on Sunday, December 22, 2024, at the Osu Castle, Dr. Kwakye emphasized the significance of the bill, urging the President to solidify his legacy by approving it.<\/p>\n
\u201cThe Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, for us Presbyterians, having given the bill our support at the time when the church was led by my predecessor, we interpreted this as our birthday gift for this year.<\/p>\n
Your Excellency, make our joy complete, we are confident that in these last days, you will make our joy complete by assenting the bill so that it becomes a law in Ghana.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe seek to preserve the values of the African people through the gospel. And we are confident that Sir you will do so.\u201d<\/p>\n
Dr. Kwakye\u2019s remarks follow the Supreme Court\u2019s unanimous dismissal of two petitions challenging the constitutionality of the Human Sexual Rights and Family Values Bill, commonly referred to as the anti-gay bill.<\/p>\n
On December 18, the Court rejected separate challenges brought by broadcast journalist and lawyer Richard Dela Sky and Amanda Odoi.<\/p>\n
The bill, passed by Parliament on February 28, 2024, has been a source of national debate. Advocates argue it protects traditional family values, while critics claim it infringes on human rights.<\/p>\n
Despite the Court\u2019s dismissal of the petitions, the bill\u2019s future remains uncertain as President Akufo-Addo had earlier stated that he was awaiting resolutions to all pending legal issues.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
