{"id":268182,"date":"2024-12-19T18:53:30","date_gmt":"2024-12-19T18:53:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/19\/energy-sector-needs-urgent-surgery-mahama\/"},"modified":"2024-12-19T18:53:30","modified_gmt":"2024-12-19T18:53:30","slug":"energy-sector-needs-urgent-surgery-mahama","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/19\/energy-sector-needs-urgent-surgery-mahama\/","title":{"rendered":"Energy sector needs urgent surgery \u2013 Mahama"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>President-elect John Dramani Mahama has raised alarms about the critical state of Ghana\u2019s energy sector, emphasising the urgent need for comprehensive reforms.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during a courtesy call on him by the Canadian High Commissioner to Ghana, Myriam Montrat, in Accra on Friday, Mahama highlighted the sector\u2019s precarious situation and the potential risks it poses to the nation\u2019s economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe energy sector needs urgent surgery otherwise it can collapse everything,\u201d Mahama stated.<\/p>\n<p>He criticised the current administration\u2019s portrayal of economic recovery, pointing out the significant debt burden that remains unresolved.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou have a $2.5 billion debt, your bailout is only $3 billion, and so $2.5 billion sitting and breathing and you say the economy is turning around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mahama warned that the unresolved debt could undermine any progress made, suggesting that the current government\u2019s optimistic economic narrative is misleading.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat alone can crush everything that has been done and so they want to create a more upbeat story about their economic management before they leave office,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The President-elect assured Ghanaians that his administration would provide transparency regarding the true state of the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to open the books when we come and let Ghanaians know what the true situation is.
