Don’t be too excited about our fall now, because you will face the same thing.”

The NPP leader made it clear that the dynamics of Ghana’s political scene could shift dramatically, and the NDC would eventually face their own challenges, including voter apathy.

Voter apathy, which emerged as an issue during the 2024 general elections, has been a point of concern for both major parties. Afenyo-Markin pointed out that the low voter turnout reflected a deeper problem—an erosion of trust in both the NPP and the NDC.

“Ghanaians don’t trust the NPP and NDC,” he said, underlining that the decline in voter engagement revealed a disillusionment with the two dominant political parties.

This phenomenon, according to Afenyo-Markin, was a significant factor in the NPP’s inability to break the cycle of alternating power between the two major parties.

While acknowledging the electoral defeat, Afenyo-Markin remained hopeful for the future of the NPP, suggesting that the party would regroup and strategize for the upcoming political contests.

He also hinted that the NDC’s victory might not last long, predicting that the NDC would face similar challenges in the 2028 general elections.

His words suggested that voter apathy could rear its head again, potentially leading to another cycle of political instability.

The NPP’s challenge to break the “eighth cycle” of alternating governments—where after every two terms, the party in power is replaced—was undermined by the low voter turnout.

Afenyo-Markin argued that this cycle of electoral change could be seen as a sign of systemic dissatisfaction with both major political forces.

Despite the NPP’s loss, he expressed a sense of optimism, believing that the party could rebound and regain its footing in future elections.

According to 3News, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the outgoing Majority Leader of Parliament and Member of Parliament for Efutu, has urged the National Democratic Congress (NDC) not to become overly excited about their victory in the 2024 general elections.
