Even though John Dramani Mahama only has one term left as president, talks are already under way over who will be the NDC&#8217;s flagbearer, according to reports from MyJoyOnline on December 18, 2024.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nDuring a visit on Joy FM&#8217;s Super Morning Show, Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the departing Majority Leader in Parliament, offered his thoughts on the internal conflicts within the NDC. He pointed out that parliamentarians are actively running for the flagbearer role, and the party&#8217;s leadership race has already begun. Afenyo-Markin did not identify the MPs who were engaged, but his remarks suggested that the party was becoming more and more divided as competing groups started to form ahead of the 2028 election.<br \/>&#13;<br \/>\nIn the December 7 election, Mahama received over six million votes. He is reaching the end of his second and last term as stipulated by the Ghanaian constitution. Speculation regarding the NDC&#8217;s leadership and future course has been heightened by his imminent departure. Afenyo-Markin&#8217;s comments highlight the growing strain inside the party as attention turns to the upcoming presidential race and succession planning. Keeping the NDC united will be essential as it negotiates these internal issues. The emergence of power disputes may significantly affect the party&#8217;s electoral strategy in 2028.
