{"id":267571,"date":"2024-12-18T17:41:42","date_gmt":"2024-12-18T17:41:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/18\/unesco-ghana-calls-for-holistic-process-in-african-artifacts-restitution\/"},"modified":"2024-12-18T17:41:42","modified_gmt":"2024-12-18T17:41:42","slug":"unesco-ghana-calls-for-holistic-process-in-african-artifacts-restitution","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/18\/unesco-ghana-calls-for-holistic-process-in-african-artifacts-restitution\/","title":{"rendered":"UNESCO Ghana calls for holistic process in African artifacts restitution\u00a0\u00a0"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>By Patrick Ofoe Nudzi\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Accra, Dec. 18, GNA \u2013 UNESCO Ghana has emphasized that the country\u2019s journey towards returning its artifacts must involve a thorough process of repair and reconciliation.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>This process should address the injustices caused by the expropriation of cultural materials, human remains, and intangible heritage by colonial powers.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>It should involve reclaiming traditional knowledge systems, addressing socio-political inequalities, revitalizing shared cultural narratives, and promoting a dialogue based on mutual respect.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Carl Ampah, UNESCO\u2019s National Programme Officer, said this at the African Restitution Forum, which was organized by the University of Ghana\u2019s Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies in collaboration with the Ghana Heritage Committee.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The event occurred at a crucial time as Ghana was in the process of reclaiming its cultural sovereignty through the return of artifacts and royal regalia to the Ashanti Kingdom.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ampah, speaking on behalf of Mr. Edmond Moukala, Representative of the UNESCO Accra Office, said that restitution involved not only repatriation but also reparation, accountability, and establishing equitable relationships.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>He underscored the significance of the UNESCO 1970 Convention on the Means of Prohibiting and Preventing Illicit Import, Export, and Transfer of Ownership of Cultural Property as a foundational document for discussions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Ampah called for international cooperation in returning cultural heritage to its rightful owners.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA recent BBC article published on December 3, 2024, claims that Cambridge University alone has 350,000 African artefacts and manuscripts including human remains, photographs and natural history specimens in their collection,\u201d he noted.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHow many more are unaccounted for?
