{"id":266951,"date":"2024-12-17T15:04:32","date_gmt":"2024-12-17T15:04:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/17\/probe-utilisation-of-timber-stumpage-fees-to-communities-journalists-urged\/"},"modified":"2024-12-17T15:04:32","modified_gmt":"2024-12-17T15:04:32","slug":"probe-utilisation-of-timber-stumpage-fees-to-communities-journalists-urged","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/17\/probe-utilisation-of-timber-stumpage-fees-to-communities-journalists-urged\/","title":{"rendered":"Probe utilisation of timber stumpage fees to communities \u2013 Journalists urged"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"article-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/cdn.ghanaweb.com\/imagelib\/pics\/482\/48210446.295.jpg\" alt=\"Timber contract holders required to contribute 5% of stumpage fees\" title=\"Timber contract holders required to contribute 5% of stumpage fees\" width=\"295\" height=\"154\" \/> <span class=\"image_caption\"><span>Timber contract holders required to contribute 5% of stumpage fees<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div style=\"-webkit-user-select: none; -webkit-touch-callout: none; -moz-user-select: none; -ms-user-select: none; user-select: none;\">\n<p id=\"article-123\">Journalists have been urged to investigate the use of stumpage fees paid to communities in timber logging areas to ensure locals benefit from the timber business.<\/p>\n<p>Under the Timber Resource Management and Legality Licensing Regulations of 2017, timber contract holders are required to contribute 5 percent of stumpage fees toward the development of communities within their operational zones as part of a Social Responsibility Agreement (SRA).<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Daryl Bosu, Deputy National Coordinator of A Rocha Ghana, emphasized that the media should track whether these contract holders honour their SRA commitments and determine if the funds are being used for the actual benefit of the community members.<\/p>\n<p>He made the call during a presentation at a training for journalists in Accra on Forest Management, Carbon Markets, and Revenue Mobilization.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day training was organized by the Media Foundation for West Africa (MFWA) as part of the \u201cTax for Development\u201d project, which is funded by NORAD through OXFAM in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>The training aimed to equip journalists with the knowledge to report effectively on forest and biodiversity conservation issues, environmental and climate protection, and the livelihoods of local communities.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Bosu also highlighted that Ghana loses 2 percent of its 266 Forest Reserves annually, equating to approximately 2.6 million hectares of protected forest areas.<\/p>\n<p>He pointed out that illegal mining remained a significant threat to the country\u2019s forest resources, jeopardizing both biodiversity conservation and water resource protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe more journalists are able to project the issues as it is, the better communities are able to understand and take action,\u201d Mr. Bosu said.<\/p>\n<p>Ghana is one of the few countries in Africa to develop a comprehensive Carbon Market Framework \u2013 an initiative that seeks to unlock investments to create green businesses and provide jobs.<\/p>\n<p>Mr. Daniel Lamptey, Environmental Protection Agency principal programmes officer, said the Carbon Market Framework was one way to mobilize private sector funding to implement conditional climate actions.<\/p>\n<p>He appealed to the media to shed light on Ghana\u2019s carbon office and the opportunities for the private sector to help increase participation and raise funds to undertake critical climate interventions.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Rosemond Ebi-Adwo Aryeteey, Senior Programmes Manager, MFWA, said the training empowered journalists to understand the technical issues relating to carbon market and forest management to enable them to support awareness creation on the topics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur expectation is that with all that has been shared by the facilitators, the participants have gotten new ideas to pursue impactful stories to improve our forest management and enhance our climate actions,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Timber contract holders required to contribute 5% of stumpage fees Journalists have been urged to investigate the use of stumpage fees paid to communities in timber logging areas to ensure locals benefit from the timber business.
