{"id":266107,"date":"2024-12-16T07:36:01","date_gmt":"2024-12-16T07:36:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/16\/ken-ofori-atta-grew-too-pompous-and-more-powerful-than-akufo-addo-andy-appiah-kubi\/"},"modified":"2024-12-16T07:36:01","modified_gmt":"2024-12-16T07:36:01","slug":"ken-ofori-atta-grew-too-pompous-and-more-powerful-than-akufo-addo-andy-appiah-kubi","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/16\/ken-ofori-atta-grew-too-pompous-and-more-powerful-than-akufo-addo-andy-appiah-kubi\/","title":{"rendered":"\u2018Ken Ofori-Atta grew too pompous and more powerful than Akufo-Addo\u2019 \u2013 Andy Appiah-Kubi"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Speaking in an interview on TV3, he detailed what he described as the dysfunctional dynamics in the government under Mr Ofori-Atta\u2019s tenure.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Appiah-Kubi criticised the former Minister for his perceived arrogance and lack of responsiveness to the Economic Management Team (EMT), which is chaired by Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.<\/p>\n<p>The outgoing legislator was a leading figure in the #KenMustGo campaign, which called for the resignation of Mr Ofori-Atta amidst Ghana\u2019s economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the reason that we said he must go was that Ken was not responding to advice from even the Economic Management Team,\u201d he revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The MP alleged that instead of the Finance Minister answering to the Vice President, the opposite often occurred.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDr. Bawumia was supposed to be chairing the committee. How many times would they call? I know for a fact that Dr. Bawumia would have to go to the Minister of Finance in his ministerial office, instead of the Vice President inviting him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Appiah-Kubi characterised Mr Ofori-Atta as a \u201cpompous\u201d figure whose influence undermined the hierarchy of governance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe grew too pompous\u2026 When you have a system that has turned upside down like that, you don\u2019t expect the system to generate the required results.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>\n       <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/12\/66439c37c7b0bf6b6c366fccc4bfec04\" alt=\"\" data-image-width=\"1024\" data-image-height=\"683\"\/><figcaption>\n        Ken Ofori-Atta Photographer: Simon Dawson\/Bloomberg via Getty Images<br \/>\n       <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The MP went further, claiming that Ofori-Atta wielded influence exceeding even the President\u2019s authority.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was more powerful than Dr Bawumia, more powerful than even the President. The President would tell him, \u2018Go and do this,\u2019 and he\u2019d say, \u2018That won\u2019t happen.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Mr Appiah-Kubi shared an incident where Ofori-Atta allegedly overstepped during a party meeting:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe came to our meeting and said that, \u2018I procured this victory.\u2019 I stood up and said, \u2018My friend, what are you saying? I didn\u2019t see your hand in love [the campaign efforts].\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The MP recalled challenging Ofori-Atta\u2019s assertion that he single-handedly secured the party\u2019s electoral success:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt cannot be the case that you, as a single person, procured victory for everybody.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the tense dynamics, Mr Appiah-Kubi lauded Vice President Bawumia for his composure amid the challenges.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLet me commend Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia for the patience he had. I wouldn\u2019t have survived that kind of treatment,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>The MP contrasted Bawumia\u2019s calm demeanour with his own limits, expressing admiration for the Vice President\u2019s ability to navigate the strained relationship with Ofori-Atta.<\/p>\n<p>Appiah-Kubi lamented the state of governance during Ofori-Atta\u2019s tenure, describing it as riddled with disrespect and dysfunction:<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe system turned upside down.
