{"id":265596,"date":"2024-12-14T18:25:14","date_gmt":"2024-12-14T18:25:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/14\/lecturer-cautions-government-against-calls-for-canceling-contracts\/"},"modified":"2024-12-14T18:25:14","modified_gmt":"2024-12-14T18:25:14","slug":"lecturer-cautions-government-against-calls-for-canceling-contracts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/14\/lecturer-cautions-government-against-calls-for-canceling-contracts\/","title":{"rendered":"Lecturer cautions government against calls for canceling contracts"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Senior Lecturer at the University of Ghana Business School (UGBS), Dr George Acheampong, has underscored the importance of prudent contract management for Ghana\u2019s incoming administration, especially in the current economic climate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Dr Acheampong emphasised that while calls from Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) to annul contracts, particularly those involving local Ghanaian businesses, are understandable, such actions must be weighed carefully to avoid harming the economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The advice comes on the back of calls by some CSOs in the Extractive Industry, asking the incoming government to terminate the revenue assurance contract between the GRA and SML, Abolish the Agyapa Royalty Deal, and Review the Minerals Income Investment Fund, among a host of other demands.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He acknowledges that some contracts may lack transparency and merit scrutiny, but argues that blanket annulments could lead to financial liabilities, including judgment debts, and destabilize Ghanaian businesses, which are crucial for economic growth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cBefore terminating any agreements, a thorough review is necessary,\u201d Mr Acheampong urged. \u201cWe must ensure these decisions are not made hastily, as they could further damage our national coffers.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Acheampong stressed the importance of engagement and dialogue, not only with the businesses involved but also with CSOs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He advocates for transparent renegotiations of contracts to better align them with the country\u2019s development goals, ensuring they benefit both the government and local enterprises. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe cannot afford to destabilise Ghanaian businesses; they are key to our economic sovereignty,\u201d he said in an article copied to the media.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The article also highlighted the role of CSOs in promoting accountability but warns against campaigns that disproportionately target local businesses in favour of foreign entities. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Acheampong called for responsible advocacy that benefits the broader national interest.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He concluded with a call to the incoming administration; \u201cAct cautiously, review contracts comprehensively, and ensure the decisions are inclusive, involving all relevant stakeholders.
