Some sports personalities who participated in the 2024 parliamentary elections did not achieve impactful results after suffering defeats in their constituencies.

The five sports personalities who took part in the elections are Mustapha Ussif, Pius Enam Hadzide, Frederick Acheampong, Evans Bobbie Opoku, and Ignatius Baffour Awuah.

Among the five personalities, only the Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, was able to win a parliamentary seat, while the remaining four lost.

This GhanaWeb Sports feature details the performance of the sports personalities in the 2024 parliamentary elections.

Mustapha Ussif

The Minister of Youth and Sports, Mustapha Ussif, won the parliamentary seat in Yagaba-Kubori in the Northern Region, retaining the seat for the second time.

The New Patriotic Party (NPP) MP garnered 18,917 votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Musah Sibiri Amidu, polled 11,385 votes. There were 30,302 votes cast, with 497 being rejected.

The sports minister is among the few NPP MPs who survived the tsunami that befell the ruling government in the parliamentary and presidential elections.

Former Deputy Minister of Youth and Sports, Pius Enam Hadzide, lost his parliamentary seat in the Asuogyaman constituency in the Eastern Region.

Hadzide, representing the New Patriotic Party (NPP), polled 21,290 votes, while the National Democratic Congress (NDC) candidate, Thomas Ampem Nyarko, garnered 26,085 votes to secure victory.

The NPP parliamentary candidate came under vehement criticism during the campaign period after promising to travel with some constituents to the 2026 World Cup in the United States if Ghana qualifies.

The backlash he received on social media platforms possibly affected his chances of winning the elections.

Evans Bobbie Opoku
