The immediate past Governor of Ekiti State and former Chairman of the Nigeria Governors\u2019 Forum, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, has congratulated Ghana\u2019s President-elect, John Mahama, on his victory in the country\u2019s recent general elections.<\/p>\n
In a statement released on Sunday, signed by Mallam Ahmad Sajoh, Head of Fayemi Media, Fayemi praised Ghana\u2019s political process as a shining example of democracy in Africa. He also commended the presidential candidate of the incumbent New Patriotic Party, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, for his gracious concession speech.<\/p>\n
\u201cDr. Bawumia\u2019s acceptance of the electoral outcome in the spirit of peace and national unity exemplifies the very best of African political leadership,\u201d Fayemi said, describing the act as a demonstration of political maturity and respect for democratic values.<\/p>\nElection officials count the ballots after polls closed in the general elections in Accra, Ghana, Saturday, Dec. 7, 2024 (AP Photo\/Misper Apawu)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Fayemi, who regards himself as a friend of both leaders, congratulated Mahama on his victory, stating, \u201cThis triumph reflects the trust and confidence the people of Ghana have in his leadership and vision for their country.\u201d<\/p>\n
He further emphasised the significance of Bawumia\u2019s concession, saying, \u201cDr. Bawumia\u2019s decision to place the interests of Ghana above personal ambition reinforces the values of democracy and demonstrates a maturity that will undoubtedly serve as a model for political actors across the continent.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fayemi urged African politicians to learn from Ghana\u2019s example, stressing the importance of respecting the will of the electorate and allowing democratic institutions to function independently.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs Africans, we must draw lessons from Ghana\u2019s example. The supremacy of the people\u2019s will is the cornerstone of democracy, and the desire to serve must always align with the mandate freely given by the electorate, not through coercion or manipulation,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
He further commended Ghana for setting high standards, adding, \u201cGhana has set high standards by proving that democracy can thrive in Africa when institutions are allowed to function independently and political actors prioritise the collective good over individual aspirations.\u201d<\/p>\n
Fayemi called on political actors across the continent to emulate the conduct of both Mahama and Bawumia, stating that their actions have deepened Ghana\u2019s democratic culture and solidified its position as a beacon of hope for Africa.<\/p>\n
