{"id":263187,"date":"2024-12-08T23:37:17","date_gmt":"2024-12-08T23:37:17","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/08\/cjid-dubawa-harp-on-credible-polls\/"},"modified":"2024-12-08T23:37:17","modified_gmt":"2024-12-08T23:37:17","slug":"cjid-dubawa-harp-on-credible-polls","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/08\/cjid-dubawa-harp-on-credible-polls\/","title":{"rendered":"CJID, DUBAWA harp on credible polls"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">As Ghana concluded its 2024 general elections, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development and its fact-checking subsidiary, DUBAWA, have restated their commitment to ensuring transparent, credible, and inclusive elections.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Ghana\u2019s former president John Drahami Mahama won a historic comeback election victory on Sunday after the ruling party accepted defeat with voters appearing to punish them for the government\u2019s handling of an economic crisis.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">According to AFP, following Saturday\u2019s election, New Patriotic Party candidate Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia on Sunday conceded Ghanaians wanted change after he failed to shake off widespread frustration over high costs of living.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">His defeat ended eight years in power for the NPP under President Nana Akufo-Addo, whose last term was marked by the country\u2019s worst economic turmoil in years, high inflation and a debt default.<\/p>\n<p><amp-video-iframe src=\"https:\/\/360playvid.info\/slidepleer\/videoIframe.html?fn=s1184s\" width=\"16\" height=\"9\" layout=\"responsive\" dock=\"#pv-dock-slot\" style=\" overflow: visible !important;\"> <\/amp-video-iframe><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">CJID deployed 19 observers, fact-checkers, and OSINT analysts to monitor and verify information circulating ahead of the and during the December polls.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">The personnel worked through the organisation\u2019s Media in National Elections initiative and verification campaigns, focusing on countering misinformation and disinformation that could undermine public trust in the electoral outcome.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In its earlier two reports, CJID provided insights into citizens\u2019 perceptions of the electoral environment as well as patterns and threats posed by misinformation and disinformation.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Additionally, CJID\u2019s Digital Technology, AI, and Information Disorder Analysis Centre identified online trends threatening electoral integrity.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">In the latest article published by DUBAWA Ghana (\u201cAgyapadie Circus: A Make-Believe Toxic Politico-Ethnic Document for Election\u201d), DUBAWA found evidence of political propaganda spreading on social media ahead of the polls.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">DUBAWA Ghana also successfully debunked AI-generated deepfake content circulating on social media platforms, further exposing the novel tactics used to manipulate public opinion.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">To address these challenges, the CJID collaborated closely with the Ghana Fact-checking Coalition, the West Africa Network for Peacebuilding, Deutsche Gesellschaft f\u00fcr Internationale Zusammenarbeit, and tech partners, including META and TikTok.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">Three situation rooms were established in Accra, Tamale, and Kumasi, enabling real-time monitoring, rapid verification, and prompt responses to misleading claims that could sway voters or incite tension.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cOur goal is to strengthen trust, encourage informed participation, and ensure a peaceful electoral environment,\u201d said the Director of Programs at CJID, Akintunde Babatunde.\n<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: justify;\">\u201cBy working together, citizens and institutions can uphold democratic values and safeguard Ghana\u2019s longstanding reputation as one of West Africa\u2019s most stable democracies.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As Ghana concluded its 2024 general elections, the Centre for Journalism Innovation and Development and its fact-checking subsidiary, DUBAWA, have restated their commitment to ensuring transparent, credible, and inclusive elections.
