The ballot was hotly contested between Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the former President John Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). With President Nana Akufo-Addo stepping down after two terms, the stakes were undeniably high.<\/p>\n<p>The election unfolded against the backdrop of significant economic distress. Ghana, known for its production of gold and cocoa, has grappled with inflation rates reaching unprecedented levels, including a peak of over 50% last year. The government has navigated through a debt default, all the whilst negotiating for financial assistance amounting to around $3 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).
