With 18,774,159 registered voters and more than 40,000 polling stations, the atmosphere is distinctly charged with anticipation.<\/p>\n<p>The two leading contenders are Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia from the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and former President John Mahama, representing the main opposition party, the National Democratic Congress (NDC). This election, dubbed by many as tightly contested, emerges from the backdrop of Ghana&#8217;s struggling economy which has been marred by high inflation and the recent need for negotiations over a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF).<\/p>\n<aside class=\"ads ads-inarticle\"\/>\n<p>Historically, Ghana&#8217;s elections have largely been two-horse races, and this year is no different.
