With the election day set for December 7, 2024, the mood across the country is charged with the anticipation of change or continuity. This election, particularly important for the country’s democratic process, is being closely watched both locally and internationally.

The Electoral Commission (EC), led by chairperson Mrs. Jean Adukwei Mensa, recently shared key updates on the preparations for the upcoming elections. One of the highlights was the special voting exercise conducted for individuals such as security personnel and journalists, which saw impressive turnout statistics. According to the EC’s reports, the lowest polling station turnout was recorded at 83%, signifying strong participation.

Addressing the media, Mrs. Mensa assured the public they should not expect any shortages of voting materials and equipment. She stated, “We don’t anticipate any shortage in any part of the country,” emphasizing the commission’s commitment to ensuring all regions are well equipped for the elections.

With over 18 million registered voters, which is about 55% of the country’s total population, the stakes are high. The registration process, marked by its challenges, has nevertheless resulted in significant participation from the electorate. The impending elections promise to be pivotal, as both political parties—the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the National Democratic Congress (NDC)—prepare their campaigns.

The NPP, with Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia as its flagbearer, gears up for what it believes will be another win, promoting their alignment with economic progress and stability. Bawumia’s rhetoric positions him as the future of Ghana, opposing the former president John Mahama, whom he frames as representing the past. “Mahama is the past, and I am Ghana’s future,” Bawumia asserted, invoking the sentiment of change to galvanize voters.

Meanwhile, the NDC candidate, former president Mahama, campaigns on the premise of restoring the country and promises of significant reforms should he be re-elected. Mahama criticized several policies implemented under the NPP administration, especially focusing on economic issues and governance challenges faced during their term. He has also raised concerns over the EC’s handling of voter registration, particularly accusing them of mishandling serial numbers on validating stamps, which he believes could affect the election’s integrity.

The EC has made strides not only to secure materials and access for voters but also to promote transparency by accrediting over 20,000 local and international observers. These observers have been granted access to polling stations across the nation, ensuring accountability throughout the electoral process. Mrs. Mensa insisted on the importance of truthful reporting during the elections, urging the media to responsibly utilize their platforms to keep the public informed.

On the ground, preparation for the special voting exercise involved logistical details including the distribution of electoral materials to polling centers and recognizing the role of journalists and security forces. With around 10,000 media personnel accredited, the EC emphasizes the need for accurate coverage of the electoral process, reminding reporters, “Rise to the task and cover elections accurately and truthfully.”

The atmosphere surrounding the election has been charged, with political rallies erupting as both parties make their case to the electorate. The NPP and NDC are encouraging supporters to engage actively, stressing the importance of voting and the impact each vote carries.

With the election drawing near, various sectors are preparing for the public’s engagement, including civil society organizations urging for peaceful conduct, recognition of electoral rules, and active participation of citizens. The National Election Security Taskforce has also been vocal, advising voters to follow regulations to maintain peace during the voting process.

The coming weeks leading up to the election day will be marked by heightened activities as both candidates seek to make their final pitches. It is anticipated the outcome of this election will be instrumental in shaping Ghana’s political future, with many voters anxious to see the changes it might bring.

Finally, as the nation enters this decisive period, the focus on transparent processes, voter engagement, and the integrity of the elections will continue to be at the forefront of discussions across Ghana.

Ghana is gearing up for its third presidential election since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic.
