Prampram, Dec. 06, GNA \u2013 The Greater Accra Regional Peace Council (GARPC), together\u00a0with the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE), has held a sensitisation workshop\u00a0for electorate in the Ningo-Prampram constituency.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The workshop is aimed at educating the electorate on violent extremism in some selected\u00a0hotspots within the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
The theme for the workshop \u201cPreventing Violent Extremism in Hotspots in the Context of the\u00a0General Elections,\u201d is to ensure that the issue of violent extremism and the threats it could\u00a0pose to the elections was brought to the knowledge of the constituents.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Mawuli Agbenu, the Greater Accra Regional Director of the NCCE, explained violent\u00a0extremism as the use of violence to promote political, religious, or social ideologies among\u00a0people.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Agbenu noted that democracy was the exchange of ideas; therefore, anyone who did not\u00a0tolerate the ideas and philosophies of others resorted to violence.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He said that a violent extremist ended up in violence and chaos when correcting any issues;\u00a0therefore, the need to sensitise and caution the electorate was important, as it served as\u00a0caution against such persons.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He cited countries such as Burkina Faso, Togo, and Ivory Coast, which surrounded the\u00a0country and had been involved in violent extremism activities, noting that since the\u00a0commission did not want such things to happen in Ghana, they were preparing the minds of\u00a0the people to ensure that there was no violence in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Agbenu also stated that the commission had sensitised the electorates in the northern\u00a0parts of the country as research had shown that activities that lead to violent extremism\u00a0were already present in the country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He listed economic hardship, high youth unemployment, unequal development, and lack of\u00a0opportunities for the young people in the country as some factors that led to violent\u00a0extremism, especially among the youths.\u00a0<\/p>\n
\u201cDemocracy is a better way; we may have problems now, but with democracy, there is an\u00a0opportunity to solve your problems. Peace is not only about the absence of violence but a\u00a0situation where everyone is able to pursue their aspirations and flourish,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He added that the NCCE had done its best to promote and ensure a peaceful election but\u00a0might not have reached its target due to resource constraints, adding that the commission\u00a0was, however, relying on the trainees and the media in the promotion of peace in the\u00a0various communities.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He urged the constituents to prevent money from taking centre stage in their decision-making process and advised them to peacefully cast their votes because elections are\u00a0peaceful processes of collective decision-making.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr George Okoe Mensa, the Principal Administrative Manager of the GARPC, noted that the\u00a0mandate of the peace council was to facilitate and develop mechanisms for conflict\u00a0prevention, conflict management, and conflict resolution to build sustainable peace in the\u00a0country.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Mensa said that one way to sustain peace in the country was to have constructive\u00a0engagement with the various stakeholders and educate the communities about violent\u00a0extremism and vigilantism-related issues.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He noted, \u201cAside from Ghanaians being from different ethnic backgrounds and having\u00a0different preferences, they should know that they are one people and have one country.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n
He urged political parties to be magnanimous enough not to provoke the other parties\u00a0during their celebration when they win the elections, as that might lead to conflicts.\u00a0<\/p>\n
Mr Mensa reiterated the advice to electorates to vote peacefully without engaging in\u00a0provocative words that might escalate into misunderstanding and create chaos.\u00a0<\/p>\n
He also called on security personnel, media, and the electoral officials to be professional and\u00a0impartial in discharging their duties during the elections.\u00a0<\/p>\n
