This is because journalists have power to shape citizens\u2019 perspec\u00adtives, attitudes and behaviours through stories, images and voices it amplifies.<\/p>\n
The Convener of Alliance for Women in Media Africa (AWMA), Ms Mercy Catherine Adjabeng, made the call at a public forum on the theme: \u2018Voices for Change: Transforming Media Narratives,\u2019 in Accra, yesterday.<\/p>\n
The event, organised by AWMA in collaboration with GIZ, the German corporation, in commem\u00adoration of the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence, brought together media profes\u00adsionals, advocates, and activists, to discuss the critical role of media in preventing and responding to gender-based violence.<\/p>\n
Ms Adjabeng noted that jour\u00adnalists could either perpetuate or challenge the social norms and stereotypes that perpetuated gen\u00adder-based violence.<\/p>\n
She emphasised the critical role the media plays in shaping public opinion and perspectives.<\/p>\n
Ms Adabeng, however, indicat\u00aded that the media often trivialised issues of violence against women, blaming victims, and perpetuating harmful stereotypes.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must not trivialise issues of violence because that is maiming somebody, that is taking some\u00adbody\u2019s livelihood from him or her, that is ending somebody\u2019s life,\u201d she advised.<\/p>\n
Moreover, Ms Adjabeng stressed that the media had the power to influence policies, behaviours, and attitudes and, therefore, urged \u201cmedia professionals to use their platforms to advocate end to gen\u00adder-based violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
She explained that the forum was aimed at exploring solutions to the problem of gender-based violence rather than simply high\u00adlighting the issue.<\/p>\n
The Executive Director of Ark Foundation, Dr Angela Dwame\u00adna-Aboagye, highlighted the need for media professionals to undergo training on gender-based vio\u00adlence, including its nature, impact, dynamics, prevalence and conse\u00adquences.<\/p>\n
Such a training, she said, would enable journalists to report on gender-based violence issues with sensitivity, empathy and account\u00adability.<\/p>\n
Dr Dwamena-Aboagye then urged media professionals to ad\u00adhere to ethical standards, including confidentiality, saying \u201csurvi\u00advor-centredness and sensitivity are essential skills for journalists re\u00adporting on gender-based violence.\u201d<\/p>\n
Participants discussed how the media can be a powerful force for change, raising awareness, and pro\u00adviding a platform for survivors to share their stories and experiences.<\/p>\n
