{"id":260145,"date":"2024-12-04T09:36:02","date_gmt":"2024-12-04T09:36:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/04\/ndcs-tanko-computer-slams-ashanti-regional-ec-boss-for-blocking-party-seals\/"},"modified":"2024-12-04T09:36:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-04T09:36:02","slug":"ndcs-tanko-computer-slams-ashanti-regional-ec-boss-for-blocking-party-seals","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/04\/ndcs-tanko-computer-slams-ashanti-regional-ec-boss-for-blocking-party-seals\/","title":{"rendered":"NDC\u2019s Tanko-Computer slams Ashanti Regional EC boss for blocking party seals"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The NDC\u2019s Deputy Director of Elections and IT has accused the Ashanti Regional Electoral Commission (EC) Director of undermining electoral procedures by blocking the NDC from sealing ballot boxes during Monday\u2019s special voting exercise.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer, speaking on Joy News\u2019 described the incident as a serious violation of electoral laws and a threat to Ghana\u2019s democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe special voting wasn\u2019t rosy,\u201d he revealed during an interview on on Tuesday. \u201cIf not because we had to hold back our anger, it would have stared in the face of Ghanaians.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tanko-Computer detailed the events of Sunday evening, a day before the special voting exercise, when the EC distributed ballot boxes and electoral materials.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that traditionally, political parties are allowed to place their seals on ballot boxes alongside those of the EC, a process aimed at safeguarding the integrity of the elections.<\/p>\n<p>However, Tanko-Computer alleged that the Ashanti Regional EC Director gave explicit instructions to district officers to deny the NDC the opportunity to place their seals on the ballot boxes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am saying he gave instructions. He told them that the NDC should not put a seal. When I confronted him, he asked me, \u2018If we have 400 ballot boxes, are you going to put seals on all of them?\u2019 And I told him, \u2018If you bring 1 million ballot boxes, I will put 1 million seals. That\u2019s what the CI says.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tanko-Computer escalated the matter to senior EC officials, including Mr. Tettey and Dr. Bossman Asare, who intervened.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey had to call him, and he finally backed down. But by then, some districts were already operating under his initial orders,\u201d he lamented.<\/p>\n<p>Dr. Tanko-Computer further criticised the Ashanti Regional EC Director for allegedly instructing officials not to share the validation stamp number with party agents, a move he described as a blatant violation of CI 127, the regulation guiding elections in Ghana.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CI is very clear,\u201d Dr. Tanko-Computer said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore voting begins, Part A and Part B of the pink sheet must be completed. Part B includes the validation stamp number, which must be recorded to ensure that any stamp not matching that number during sorting can be identified as foreign material. Yet, the Regional Director ordered that this information should not be shared with our agents.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accused the EC official of jeopardising Ghana\u2019s peace and democracy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis Regional Director is the one who will jeopardize the peace accord we signed. Who is giving him powers he doesn\u2019t have?\u201d Dr. Tanko-Computer questioned.<\/p>\n<p>Responding to the claims, Evans Nimako, the Director of Research and Elections for the governing New Patriotic Party (NPP), dismissed Tanko-Computer\u2019s concerns as exaggerated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe guiding rule is CI 127,\u201d Mr. Nimako stated.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSealing of ballot boxes is done at multiple levels\u2014starting from Accra at the printing houses to the regional and district levels. If Tanko-Computer\u2019s agents missed sealing at one point, they should simply rectify it at another.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He accused the NDC of creating unnecessary tension.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve heard Dr. Tanko running around too many times on this small issue. The NDC\u2019s problem is Dr. Rashid Tanko-Computer and Dr. Omane Boama.
