{"id":259708,"date":"2024-12-03T00:09:37","date_gmt":"2024-12-03T00:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/03\/special-voting-is-not-a-guarantee-for-d-day-calm-ndcs-fifi-kwetey-warns-of-election-desperation\/"},"modified":"2024-12-03T00:09:37","modified_gmt":"2024-12-03T00:09:37","slug":"special-voting-is-not-a-guarantee-for-d-day-calm-ndcs-fifi-kwetey-warns-of-election-desperation","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/12\/03\/special-voting-is-not-a-guarantee-for-d-day-calm-ndcs-fifi-kwetey-warns-of-election-desperation\/","title":{"rendered":"Special Voting is not a guarantee for D-Day calm &#8211; NDC\u2019s Fifi Kwetey warns of election desperation"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The General Secretary of the National Democratic Congress (NDC), Fifi Fiafvi Kwetey, has cautioned against prematurely interpreting the smooth conduct of Ghana\u2019s special voting as an indicator of how Election Day will unfold. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speaking on Joy News\u2019 <em>PM Express<\/em> on Monday, December 2, he highlighted the contrasting dynamics between the controlled environment of special voting and the often volatile atmosphere of the general election.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cI would say, by and large, the reports we have monitored\u2014and which have also been confirmed by our agents and executives in the various places where it happened\u2014show that the exercise went on smoothly,\u201d the Ketu South MP noted. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt was devoid of violence or anything you would call a flagrant abuse of the process,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While praising the relative calm of the special voting exercise, Fifi Kwetey stated that it is historically not an accurate predictor of Election Day\u2019s dynamics. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cEven in previous elections, the special voting never was an issue. I\u2019m sure in 2016, the special voting, which was like a week earlier, was not an issue. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;But a week later, you saw what happened\u2014eight people died on the day,\u201d he said, recalling the incidents of violence that marred the general election that year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mr Kwetey suggested that the stakes on Election Day make the environment significantly different. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cOn D-Day, it\u2019s a lot more; people become much more desperate. They feel as if this is a do-or-die affair. That\u2019s when things often become more difficult,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Contrasting special voting with the general elections, Fifi Kwetey observed that the streamlined nature of the former reduces the potential for chaos. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWith special voting, it\u2019s just one centre in each place of voting, so there\u2019s a lot more ease. There\u2019s not that desperation because people feel like the major voting itself is not yet here,\u201d he remarked.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Despite his caution, Fifi Kwetey acknowledged the importance of the calm special voting process as a positive sign. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s nice\u2014it\u2019s good so far.
