{"id":258164,"date":"2024-11-30T09:10:49","date_gmt":"2024-11-30T09:10:49","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/30\/govt-has-excelled-in-implementing-imf-programme-prof-asuming\/"},"modified":"2024-11-30T09:10:49","modified_gmt":"2024-11-30T09:10:49","slug":"govt-has-excelled-in-implementing-imf-programme-prof-asuming","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/30\/govt-has-excelled-in-implementing-imf-programme-prof-asuming\/","title":{"rendered":"Govt has excelled in implementing IMF programme \u2013 Prof. Asuming"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Professor Patrick Asuming, an Economist and Senior Lecturer, at the Department of Finance, University of Ghana Business School, has assessed the country\u2019s International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and praised the government for successfully implementing the programme so far.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, said whilst macroeconomic indicators had improved from 2022, but were still worse than pre-2022 levels, micro-level data showed that economic conditions had worsened as food insecurity had worsened and more people were multidimensionally poor.<\/p>\n<p>He added, \u201cAs designed, the programme does not address the most important long-term challenges of the economy; overdependence on foreign financing and imports, weaknesses in domestic production capacity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Professor Asuming said this whilst delivering a paper during a discussion on \u201cPublic Debt and the Climate Crisis in Ghana: Promoting Economic Justice and an Integral Ecology for Citizens\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>His topic was: \u201cGhana\u2019s Debt, the IMF Programme and Fiscal Accountability\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Professor Asuming emphasised the country\u2019s unsustainable debt levels and the need for structural reforms to address the root causes of the current economic challenges.<\/p>\n<p>He said important changes were being made to the country\u2019s fiscal and monetary framework without citizen engagement and called for citizens\u2019 involvement to ensure that the desired reforms were being implemented.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Neil Thorns, Director of Advocacy and Communications, Catholic Agency for Overseas Development, made a presentation guiding participants in reflection on \u201cLaudato Si, Care for Our Common Home\u201d and the Jubilee Year 2025 \u201cPilgrims of Hope\u201d\u2013 Lines of Approach and Action (163) connecting spiritual and practical approaches to environmental and social justice, emphasising the need for action and reform.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Richard Akurugu, Executive Director of Caritas Ghana, said \u201cOur gathering today reflects the urgency of addressing two interconnected challenges: the public debt burden and the climate crisis.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He added that \u201cInspired by Pope Francis\u2019 call to hear both \u201cthe cry of the earth and the cry of the poor\u201d, we aim to explore these pressing issues from a lens of integral ecology, seeking sustainable pathways that prioritise economic justice and environmental stewardship.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The virtual discussion was organised by Caritas Ghana, the humanitarian arm of the Ghana Catholic Bishops\u2019 Conference and a member of the global Caritas Confederation, operating under the National Catholic Secretariat.<\/p>\n<p>The discussion was to explore Public Debt and Climate Crisis issues from an economic recovery and integral ecology perspective seeking sustainable pathways that prioritised economic justice, environmental stewardship and accountability.<\/p>\n<p>The Advocacy campaign mainly targeting Faith-based Leaders is a partnership with Caritas Africa and Jubilee USA, under the Africa Inclusive Economic Recovery Campaign Project ahead of the Jubilee 2025-year.<\/p>\n<p>Participants included leaders of multi-faith institutions from the FAITH in Ghana Alliance, advocates and practitioners from civil society organisations, scholars and journalists.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>#GhanaPolls2024<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>#CitiVerify<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>#ElectionBureau<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p>\u2014\u2013<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Explore the world of impactful news with CitiNewsroom on WhatsApp!<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Click on the link to join the Citi Newsroom channel for curated, meaningful stories tailored just for YOU: https:\/\/whatsapp.com\/channel\/0029VaCYzPRAYlUPudDDe53x<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<p><em><strong>No spam, just the stories that truly matter! #StayInformed #CitiNewsroom #CNRDigital<\/strong><\/em><\/p>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Professor Patrick Asuming, an Economist and Senior Lecturer, at the Department of Finance, University of Ghana Business School, has assessed the country\u2019s International Monetary Fund (IMF) programme and praised the government for successfully implementing the programme so far.
