These are inherent difficulties that, if not addressed, can destabilise our operations and the broader economy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The CEO of the Independent Power Producers (IPP), Dr Elikplim Kwabla Apetorgbor, has hinted that three power plants are set to shut down due to debts owed to the IPPs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the government has failed to honour its promises to pay the $259 million debt owed by the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In an interview with Joy FM\u00a0last week, Dr Apetorgbor warned that if the issue remains unresolved, the three key power plants will cease operations by next week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Read also: <a>Three power plants to shut down if\u2026 \u2013 IPP CEO<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"http:\/\/www.myjoyonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/11\/Dr.-Humphrey-Ayim-Darkey-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-10032421239\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As Ghana heads into its December 7 presidential election, Dr Darke\u2019s message to candidates is unequivocal: the energy sector must take centre stage in national priorities.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">According to him, the erratic energy supply, compounded by the threat of IPPs halting operations due to unpaid debts, directly affects industrial productivity and undermines investor confidence. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He warned that the situation poses a risk not only to businesses but also to Ghana\u2019s macroeconomic stability.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cThe IPPs sometimes threaten government on all fronts, and that instability spills over into the business environment,\u201d he stated. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cWe need solutions now, not later. The government must prioritize paying down these debts and ensuring a steady, reliable power supply.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">He also urged the incoming government to adopt a forward-thinking approach to managing energy-related debt. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u201cIt\u2019s not just about resolving the current crisis,\u201d he explained. \u201cWe must consider how these debts will impact our macroeconomic future.
