{"id":256346,"date":"2024-11-27T09:45:32","date_gmt":"2024-11-27T09:45:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/27\/enthusiasm-anxiety-grip-takoradi-electorate-as-dec-7-polls-get-closer\/"},"modified":"2024-11-27T09:45:32","modified_gmt":"2024-11-27T09:45:32","slug":"enthusiasm-anxiety-grip-takoradi-electorate-as-dec-7-polls-get-closer","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/27\/enthusiasm-anxiety-grip-takoradi-electorate-as-dec-7-polls-get-closer\/","title":{"rendered":"Enthusiasm, anxiety grip Takoradi electorate \u00a0\u2026as Dec.7 polls get closer"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Excitement, anxiety and optimism grip the electorate as parliamentary candidates in Takoradi crisscross the political turf to solicit votes with about 12 days to the December 7 general election.<\/p>\n<p>Undoubtedly, the political temperature is high and infectious as all is set for the Elec\u00adtoral Commission to carry out its important task of organising the polls.<\/p>\n<p>It would give Ghanaians another chance to elect a new President as President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo bows out of office on January 7, 2025 and to elect 275 new parlia\u00admentarians.<\/p>\n<p>The incumbent New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament (MP) for Takoradi Constituency, Kwabena Okyere Darko-Men\u00adsah, who is also the Regional Minister, has maintained his grips on the seat since 2008, and is gunning to retain it for the fifth time.<\/p>\n<p>Whiles the NPP and Darko-Mensah seek to consolidate their hold on power, their main opponent, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) cites economic and social conditions, including the collapse of the railway sector, unemployment and leadership issues, as the reason for change.<\/p>\n<p>Indeed, some political observers have tagged the parliamentary contest in Takora\u00addi as a \u201cbattleground\u201d for \u201ccontinuity and \u201cchange\u201d, \u201cincumbency\u201d and \u201cthe reset mode.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NDC, recently at its Effia campaign launch, vowed to snatch all the traditional seats held by the NPP, including that of Takoradi.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1024\" height=\"768\" src=\"https:\/\/ghanaiantimes.com.gh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot_27-11-2024_91012_-1024x768.jpeg\" alt=\"Prof Naana Agyeman introducees Mr Faidoo at a rally in Takoradi\" class=\"wp-image-179032\" srcset=\"https:\/\/ghanaiantimes.com.gh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot_27-11-2024_91012_-1024x768.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/ghanaiantimes.com.gh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot_27-11-2024_91012_-300x225.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/ghanaiantimes.com.gh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot_27-11-2024_91012_-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/ghanaiantimes.com.gh\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/11\/Screenshot_27-11-2024_91012_.jpeg 1138w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\"\/><figcaption class=\"wp-element-caption\">Prof Naana Agyeman introducees Mr Faidoo at a rally in Takoradi<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>However, the Vice Chairman, Takoradi NPP constituency, Maxwell Acquah, is confi\u00addent that the \u201cTaadi diadem\u201d is not under any threat and that the party will retain the seat.<\/p>\n<p>Reports monitored show that, Mr Dar\u00adko-Mensah and Frederick Faustinus Faidoo, NDC, have entered the trenches, holding health walks, mini -rallies and nightly door- to -door campaigns, with hifi- loud speakers, to win thumbs of the electorate.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Darko-Mensah in an interview with the Ghanaian Times, said the NPP will retain power in the 2024 elections, saying, \u201c we\u2019ll continue to serve and change Takoradi \u2013 we want to do more, the old wine is better than the new wine.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe believe that we\u2019ve served Takoradi well and that our continuous presence in the game enhances the chance of Western Region. Yes, there are challenges with employment, but, that\u2019s why we have brought in the Youth Investment Initiative to tackle that issue, because it\u2019s only the private sector that generates wealth,\u201d he contended.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Darko-Mensah further stated that the Kobby Entrepre\u00adneurship pro\u00adgramme, seeks to invest in the youth, provide them with equipment, create about 3,000 jobs in the constituency.<\/p>\n<p>He indicated thaat the multi-pur\u00adpose complex at New Takoradi, with access to mentor\u00adship and resources, is an incubator and accelerator for emerging entrepre\u00adneurs to actualise their business ideas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a major game changer. We are in the fourth industrial revolution, and so, we need a dream factory to ensure development. This con\u00adtains an on-site banking services to empower young individuals with effective financial management,\u201d Mr Darko-Mensah said.<\/p>\n<p>Moreover, he noted that he had established an Islamic Senior High School at the Daavi Ama to improve education in Takoradi.<\/p>\n<p>Lawyer Faidoo, complained about lack of good roads, employment for the youth, poor drainage system as critical challenges that Takoradi faces.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cThere is lack of accountability from leadership. We need leadership of ac\u00adcountability, truthfulness, to create sustainable jobs for the youth through apprenticeship programmes, as well as build the Takoradi we all want together.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Takoradi constituency, Mr Faidoo said, \u201cis the game changer for the NDC, come December 7, 2024.
