A woman approaching her 40s says she\u2019s never had a boyfriend \u2013 and is \u201ctrying not to panic\u201d as she would like to start a family.<\/p>\n
Kristabel Plummer, 37, began feeling the pressure to find a boyfriend after reading teen magazines aged 16.<\/p>\n
Throughout her teens and twenties, she feared not having a serious boyfriend would mean she was labeled \u201cweird\u201d \u2013 but she found it difficult to make it past a second or third date.<\/p>\n
Kristabel says she also experienced racist and problematic comments while dating in her late twenties \u2013 which stopped her from going on dates with men she\u2019d meet online.<\/p>\n\n \n Kristabel Plummer, 37, began feeling the pressure to find a boyfriend after reading teen magazines aged 16. \n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
She previously says she wouldn\u2019t date someone under 5ft 10in \u2013 as she is 5ft 6in herself \u2013 but has now lowered her wish list in an effort to meet the right man.<\/p>\n
Now, she lives alone and despite still going on first dates, Kristabel doesn\u2019t feel any pressure to settle down and start a family.<\/p>\n
Kristabel, an influencer, from north London, said: \u201cI am trying to stay positive \u2013 there\u2019s lots of women who have kids later, and in their forties \u2013 but to make it to a fourth date with someone would be amazing.<\/p>\n
\u201cI jokingly say \u2018this is a failure\u2019 \u2013 but it isn\u2019t, it\u2019s just a part of my story.<\/p>\n
\u201cDating in my late twenties versus now is so different \u2013 I used to feel like it was the end of the world if I was ghosted or rejected by someone.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut now I don\u2019t really cry and I deal with things quite quickly.\u201d<\/p>\n\n \n Kristabel\u2019s current \u201cgoal\u201d is to reach a third, fourth, or fifth, date with someone. \n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
When Kristabel was in her teens, in the late 1990s to early 2000s, she began reading teen magazines like \u2018Sugar\u2019 and \u2018J-17\u2019.<\/p>\n
She says attitudes towards young girls at the time meant she felt the pressure to act more mature than her age and to find a boyfriend.<\/p>\n
In reality, she didn\u2019t start \u201ccrushing on\u201d boys until she was 16 \u2013 and found it hard to meet them, going to an all-girls school in Bromley, greater London.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou do start to think: \u2018This is something I should aim for,\u2019 when you\u2019re 13 and you read those magazines,\u201d Kristabel said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI didn\u2019t really know why I was aiming for it though.<\/p>\n
\u201cNow, I might want a partner for companionship, or to avoid being lonely, but I wasn\u2019t thinking that as a teenager.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kristabel saw a couple of guys casually at the age of 16, but didn\u2019t start going on dates until she was in her twenties.<\/p>\n
At the age of 22, in December 2009, she moved to New York for six months, for work.<\/p>\n
She wanted the perfect \u201cmeet-cute\u201d \u2013 but felt disheartened when it didn\u2019t happen.<\/p>\n
On one of her last days in the city, she was approached by three separate men \u2013 but didn\u2019t feel there was \u201cany point\u201d in pursuing them.<\/p>\n
She said: \u201cWith my 37-year-old hat on, I probably should\u2019ve gone on dates with them, for the experience.<\/p>\n\n \n In her thirties, Kristabel began following Instagram accounts like @alittlenudge and @matchmakermaria for dating tips. \n <\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
\u201cBut, you don\u2019t really think like that when you\u2019re in your twenties.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere was a part of me \u2013 I know my mum had me at 23 \u2013 I thought I\u2019d be like her, with a family of my own by 25.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut at 25, I\u2019d only just finished studying to be a knitwear designer.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kristabel\u2019s next effort at dating was at the age of 27, when she joined dating site OkCupid.<\/p>\n
But a number of messages she got from men were \u201cproblematic\u201d and \u201cracist\u201d \u2013 as well as the conversations which naturally went cold.<\/p>\n
She admits she found it hard to pursue men under 6ft, as this was her usual type.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes, you\u2019d get really problematic messages,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cLike: \u2018Let\u2019s have mixed-race babies\u2019 or \u2018nice wig.\u2019<\/p>\n
\u201cI guess a lot of the guys I met weren\u2019t serious.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was also quite caught up on wanting a tall guy.<\/p>\n
\u201cI do think this may have held me back \u2013 I think quite differently now.\u201d<\/p>\n
In her thirties, Kristabel began following Instagram accounts like @alittlenudge and @matchmakermaria for dating tips.<\/p>\n
She says these accounts put her into a better headspace while navigating the dating scene.<\/p>\n
While her criteria has widened, Kristabel also doesn\u2019t want to settle with a man she isn\u2019t attracted to \u2013 and says she almost ended up in this situation while in her twenties.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019m not pressuring myself to go into dating, hoping to find my life partner,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n
\u201cYou can\u2019t always tell how things are going to go from the first date \u2013 you have to let things grow.<\/p>\n
\u201cIn the past, though, I\u2019d pick guys, not knowing for sure whether I was attracted to them.<\/p>\n
\u201cI might have settled into a few dates with guys I wasn\u2019t necessarily attracted to \u2013 I wouldn\u2019t do this now.\u201d<\/p>\n
Kristabel\u2019s current \u201cgoal\u201d is to reach a third, fourth, or fifth, date with someone.<\/p>\n
She finds it tricky to meet someone she can connect with \u2013 and says her ideal partner would be empathetic, someone she enjoys spending time with and someone she feels safe and vulnerable with.<\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
