Ghanaian UK-based gospel icon Sonnie Badu has intensified his call for peace as Ghana prepares for its general elections on December 7, 2024.

On Saturday, November 23, 2024, the renowned musician spearheaded a peace walk in Accra, rallying hundreds to advocate for harmony during the polls.

The event, dubbed The Peace Walk with Sonnie Badu, started at Danquah Circle and concluded at the Black Star Square (Independence Square).

Participants, dressed in branded T-shirts, created a colourful procession as they marched through the streets. Among the distinguished attendees were Rev. Lawrence Tetteh, Founder and President of Worldwide Miracle Outreach; gospel musician Cwesi Oteng; celebrated music producer Kaywa; and entertainment journalist Arnold Asamoah-Baidoo.

In their remarks, the speakers emphasised the importance of responsible and peaceful conduct before, during, and after the elections, urging citizens to prioritize national interest over personal or partisan gain.

Sonnie Badu’s call for peace, made earlier during a radio interview, resonated with the march’s message.

He urged Ghanaians to vote thoughtfully, saying, “Cast a vote for Ghana. Ghana must win.” Highlighting the need for discernment, he continued, “If you’re happy, vote. If not, vote. Consider your circumstances and vote. Don’t let someone deceive you with gari, rice, or yam to throw away your precious vote.”

Badu also cautioned against the transient nature of political engagements, stating, “The only time you have power is now [during the election period], and it’s shown by politicians visiting and mingling with you as if they can relate to your circumstances. When they get power, they will never come back.”

The peace walk is part of the lead-up to Sonnie Badu’s annual Rhythms of Africa gospel music concert, which is slated for Friday, November 29, 2024, at Independence Square in Accra.

This year’s event, themed The Peace Edition, seeks to promote unity and reconciliation ahead of the elections. Since its launch in 2023, Rhythms of Africa has garnered acclaim for its vibrant performances and its celebration of African spirituality through music.

The 2024 edition, which is free and open to all, underscores inclusivity and accessibility, inviting Ghanaians from all walks of life to participate.

Sonnie Badu’s efforts reflect his deep commitment to using music and faith as instruments for societal transformation.

As Ghana approaches a pivotal moment in its democratic journey, his message of peace and unity serves as a rallying cry for responsible civic engagement and national cohesion.
