{"id":254600,"date":"2024-11-22T12:27:40","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T12:27:40","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/were-disappointed-by-govts-failure-to-re-engage-us-toll-workers\/"},"modified":"2024-11-22T12:27:40","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T12:27:40","slug":"were-disappointed-by-govts-failure-to-re-engage-us-toll-workers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/were-disappointed-by-govts-failure-to-re-engage-us-toll-workers\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;re disappointed by govt&#8217;s failure to re-engage us \u2013 Toll workers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>Three years after the cessation of road toll collection, former toll workers are calling out the government for failing to fulfil promises made to them.<\/p>\n<p>On November 17, 2021, following the presentation of the 2022 Budget Statement and Economic Policy, toll collection was abruptly terminated, resulting in approximately 800 workers losing their jobs.<\/p>\n<p>The government, through then-Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta, and Roads and Highways Minister Kwasi Amoako-Atta, pledged to reassign toll workers to alternative jobs and provide them with monthly allowances in the interim.<\/p>\n<p>However, three years on, the former workers say none of these commitments have been met, leaving the affected workers hopeless.<\/p>\n<p>Edward Duncan who is the General Secretary of the Ghana Toll Workers Union said they are disappointed in the government for the delays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe government has disappointed us. We want to set the record straight. So it has been three long years since the government has failed to fulfil any of the promises it gave us, two promises actually. The first one was that they were going to find alternate livelihoods for us.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd the second one, which is attached to the first promise, is that they were going to pay us every month until they find alternate livelihoods for us.
