{"id":254302,"date":"2024-11-22T03:35:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-22T03:35:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/trudeau-plays-santa-with-seasonal-tax-break\/"},"modified":"2024-11-22T03:35:46","modified_gmt":"2024-11-22T03:35:46","slug":"trudeau-plays-santa-with-seasonal-tax-break","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2024\/11\/22\/trudeau-plays-santa-with-seasonal-tax-break\/","title":{"rendered":"Trudeau plays Santa with seasonal tax break"},"content":{"rendered":"<br><div id=\"article-text\">\n                       \n                        \n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is playing Father Christmas with a seasonally-timed tax break amid growing frustrations about Canada&#8217;s cost of living.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The prime minister announced Thursday a two-month limited-time break on sales tax on a set list of goods during the holiday season.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The list includes Christmas trees, restaurant meals, toys, alcohol and sweets, among other things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre &#8211; who will face off against the Liberal prime minister in a looming election &#8211; called Trudeau&#8217;s tax measures &#8220;a trick&#8221; aimed at deflecting attention from the government&#8217;s role in rising costs.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;For two months, Canadians are going to get a real break on everything they do,&#8221; Trudeau said during a press conference.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">&#8220;Our government can&#8217;t set prices at the checkout but we can put more money in people&#8217;s pockets. That&#8217;s going to give people the relief they need. People are squeezed and we&#8217;re there to help.&#8221;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Canadian inflation peaked at 8.1% in 2022, according to Statistics Canada, and has declined since to 2% this November. But the added costs of everything from rent to groceries have hit many Canadians&#8217; wallets.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last spring, a Statistics Canada survey found that 45% of Canadians said rising prices have made it difficult for them to meet their day-to-day expenses.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trudeau&#8217;s limited tax relief, if approved by parliament, would run from 15 December to 15 February. It would remove the federal sales tax known as GST &#8211; or the harmonised sales tax (HST) in provinces that combine federal and provincial sales taxes into one tax &#8211; from a select list of items.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Those items include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Children&#8217;s clothing<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children&#8217;s footwear<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children&#8217;s diapers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children&#8217;s car seats<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Newspapers<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Books<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Christmas trees<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Food and beverages that are normally not tax-exempt, such as prepared foods, sweets, alcohol and sodas<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Children&#8217;s toys for under-14s<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Video-game consoles<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The government estimated that the relief will save Canadians C$100-$260 (\u00a356.86-\u00a3147.82) if they spend C$2,000 (\u00a31,137.10) over this time period.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">But those holiday savings will cost the treasury an estimated $1.6bn,\u00a0a finance official told CBC News.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Trudeau is facing an uphill battle as the October 2025 election looms.\u00a0A November poll by Leger\u00a0shows Trudeau trailing his top rival, Poilievre, by 16 points.
